My approach to Internalized Capitalism Therapy.

Internalized Capitalism.

Capitalism is the political and economic system that we live under in the in US. Under capitalism, production is not based on need, but how much profit can be made. This means that there is no limit to what can be produced, and no limit to how much we are asked to do.

Under capitalism, we experience destruction of the environment, chronic waste and consumerism, exploitation of workers and much more.

Internalized capitalism is the idea that our self-worth is directly linked to our productivity. The working and poor classes of America have been taught that being the hardest working person in the room is good.

While hard work is not necessarily a bad thing, basing our worth on our productivity causes harm. Each of us has different bodies with different abilities and different levels of access.

We have varied limitations and privileges that make our lives vastly different.

Internalized Capitalism Therapy FAQs.

What is internalized capitalism?

Coined by Anders Hayden, a political science professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, internalized capitalism is this idea that our self-worth is directly linked to our productivity.

What does internalized capitalism look like?

  • Overworking.

  • Becoming burnt out, blaming yourself for not being “strong enough.“

  • Moralizing hard work, or believing that a person who works harder is a morally superior person who works less hard. Never feeling like you do enough.

  • Aiming to work overtime.

Why do I need to heal from internalized capitalism?

Because you’ve been taught to base your value on your productivity, you may develop perfectionism. Perfectionism, which is the desire to be perfect (something that can never be achieved) can lead to worsening mental health symptoms.

Is therapy worth it?

Most individuals in our culture are under the impression that surviving our day to day challenges is enough. In therapy, you can learn to not only survive your existence, but to fully live in it, and even enjoy it. So yes, therapy is absolutely worth it.

Why is therapy painful?

Human beings are incredibly adaptable. Throughout our lives, we will encounter traumas daily, both big and small. Because of this, we develop defense mechanisms that help us survive the pain we feel as a result of the trauma. These defense mechanisms are often not healthy, and can make us feel worse in the long run. In therapy, we will be breaking down those defenses to find where the pain lives. This can be a painful process, but it doesn’t last. The reward of relief, renewed strength and increased control is absolutely worth it.

Can anyone benefit from therapy?

Anyone can benefit from therapy as long as they are committed to growing and healing. However, to benefit from therapy you must be able to look inward and observe how your own thoughts/feelings/behaviors can be getting in your way.

How do we meet for sessions?

We will meet virtually on the platform Therapy Notes, which is an EHR system, or electronic health record. It is also utilized for scheduling, appointment reminders, paperwork and payment.

What is the cost per session?

  • 60 Minute Intake (these happen once) - $200

  • 45 Minute Therapy - $165

  • 90 Minute EMDR Therapy - $300

Do you accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance, services are cash pay only. But I highly value my clients’ time and hard earned money, so I do assist in the reimbursement process by providing superbills. Learn more about navigating out-of-network reimbursement and the benefits of seeing a cash pay therapist here.

What if I’m not a resident of Pennsylvania?

I am licensed to provide counseling in the state of Pennsylvania. For residents outside of PA and abroad, I provide similar services under the label of “coaching“. Learn more here!

What is your cancellation policy?

Just as I value my clients’ time and hard earned money, I also value my own. The time we schedule together is sacred, and if you are cancelling your session with insufficient notice, you are taking time away from another client who potentially needs it. Because of this, I have a strict 48 hour cancellation policy. This means that any sessions cancelled within the 48 hour window, including “no-show“ sessions, will be charged the full rate of service.
